Formula 1 have officially confirmed the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne will remain on the calendar until at least 2035, as a new 10-year deal from 2025 will also include Formula 2 and Formula 3 on the race weekend schedule for the first time starting with the next season.
This year, the Australian Grand Prix attracted more than 419,000 fans to the Albert Park circuit during race weekend, which represents the largest crowd for a weekend sporting event in the country’s history. The location has remained been on the Formula 1 calendar since the first race in Melbourne in 1996 and will continue as an important part of the calendar for the next years.
The exact date for the 2023 Australian Grand Prix will be announced soon, as Formula 1 is working on finalizing a first draft of the calendar for next season, which is subject to World Motor Sport Council approval.
“I am delighted to confirm that Melbourne and the Albert Park circuit will continue to be on the Formula 1 calendar until 2035,” – former Ferrari boss Stefano Domenicali, currently President & CEO at Formula 1, explained: “The race has always been a favourite for the fans, drivers and the teams and Melbourne is an incredible and vibrant international city that is a perfect match for our sport. This year we saw huge crowds and passionate fans at the Grand Prix, and we are very excited by the future in Australia as our sport continues to grow. I want to thank the Victorian Government, Daniel Andrews, Premier of Victoria and Martin Pakula, Minister for Tourism, Sport & Major Events for their tireless support for the event in Melbourne, as well as Andrew Westacott and Paul Little from the AGPC for making this already long-term partnership secure for the future. We are all looking forward to being back in Melbourne next season with all our fans.” – he said.
In just a few days, the attention turns to the Canadian Grand Prix at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, which starts on Friday with the first free practice sessions in Montreal. At the same time, Formula 1 are working on finalizing a record 24-race calendar for the 2023 campaign, including a new street race in Las Vegas. However, given the fact that the Covid situation in China remains uncertain, just 23 races might in fact take place next season.
