The FIA has officially confirmed that six drivers, including Scuderia Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz, will receive grid penalties for the 2022 Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix, after exceeding their maximum allocations of engine components.
Mercedes had announced on Thursday that Lewis Hamilton would be one of them: the British driver is using a fourth new power engine, turbocharger, MGU-H and MGU-K. All these components exceed his allocation, plus a fourth exhaust, which does not. At the same time, Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez will each take new engines only, their fourth and fifth examples respectively.
Scuderia Ferrari have also fitted a new MGU-K and energy store to Carlos Sainz F1-75 challenger, which the Maranello team had previously suggested for the Monza weekend. The Spaniard will also exceed his allocation of gearbox parts in the Italian Grand Prix, which will lead to an extra penalty, as the Spanish driver will start from the back of the grid.
This means that Scuderia Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Mercedes’ George Russell will be the only drivers from the three top teams that will start the race without penalties heading into this weekend’s race.

Valtteri Bottas, who retired from last week’s race, will also have a new Ferrari power unit this weekend on his Alfa Romeo car. He has significantly exceeded his allocation and has taken his seventh turbocharge and MGU-H.
AlphaTauri has also mounted a new power unit to Yuki Tsunoda’s challenger for this weekend, while also having a ten-place grid penalty this weekend after collecting his fifth reprimand of the season in the Dutch Grand Prix last week.
