Charles Leclerc was Max Verstappen’s biggest challenger for the world title in 2022, but the two drivers were close only throughout the first half of the season, when the F1-75 proved strong enough to challenge the Red Bull RB18 in terms of race pace, but a series of technical failures and poor strategy decisions from Ferrari did not allow Charles to keep up with the Dutchman.
The Ferrari driver took part in his 100th Formula 1 Grand Prix at the last round of the season, which was held at the 4.304-kilometre Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in Mexico City. Despite the fact that Charles was not able to score a great result in Mexico, the Monegasque driver can still be partially satisfied with his performance in the last few years, especially taking into consideration Ferrari’s difficult 2020 and 2021 seasons.
But how does Charles Leclerc compare with Max Verstappen’s when the Red Bull man had the same number of races to his name? Let’s take a look at the statistics below:
After 100 race weekends in Formula 1, Max Verstappen, just like Charles Leclerc, had not yet become world champion. The Dutchman was able to take more race wins: seven as compared to Charles’ current five race victories in Belgium, Italy (both in the 2019 campaign), followed by Bahrain, Australia and Austria this year.
However, the Ferrari man was on pole position much more often. While Max Verstappen started from pole position just one time during his first 100 races, Charles Leclerc was at the front no less than 18 times. Unfortunately this has not meant more victories for the Monegasque driver, as Ferrari lost several opportunities to win this season due to reliability problems and far from ideal strategic calls.
Looking at the stats, we see that Max Verstappen suffered more drop-outs: the Red Bull Racing driver was sidelined 21 times, while Charles has 17 DNF to his name so far.
Max Verstappen also scored better in terms of podium finishes: the Dutchman was on the podium 29 times during his first 100 F1 rounds, while Charles has 23 podium finishes.
