A short answer, but enough to make Ferrari fans dream. During an interview in China, Charles Leclerc was asked a direct question about the Red dream: winning the World Championship.
When asked, “Do you think you can win the World Championship this year?”, the Monegasque driver responded with great sincerity, while giving a very positive signal for the Scuderia of Maranello.
“It’s too early to say. But speaking about the innovations and from what I’ve seen on the car, I feel closer than ever to reaching that goal.”
These words don’t represent a declaration of war to rivals, but clearly convey the confidence that the Ferrari driver is developing toward the new SF-26.
A Ferrari closing in on Mercedes
The start of the 2026 season has painted a rather clear picture: for now, Mercedes remains the benchmark on the grid, but Ferrari is gradually closing the gap.
During the Chinese GP weekend, Maranello’s Scuderia was the team closest to the Silver Arrows in both qualifying and the race. In qualifying, for example, the Ferraris secured the second row with Lewis Hamilton third and Charles Leclerc fourth, significantly reducing the gap compared to the first round in Australia.
The race also offered encouraging signs: Mercedes confirmed its strength by taking the victory with Andrea Kimi Antonelli and second place with George Russell, but Ferrari remained in contention, highlighted by Hamilton’s first podium of the season and Leclerc’s fourth-place finish.
From a technical perspective, the SF-26 showed excellent behavior in corners and on the more technical sections of the circuits, while Mercedes continues to hold a slight advantage in energy management and straight-line speed.
The signal Maranello was waiting for
It is precisely this balance that makes Charles Leclerc’s words particularly interesting. The Monegasque does not speak of a title already within reach, but clearly admits he feels “closer than ever” to the world championship goal.
This signal of confidence, which had not been heard in Maranello for some time, illustrates better than any analysis how convincing the SF-26 project is for its drivers.
And while the season is still long, one thing is now clear: Ferrari really wants to give it a go this year.
Charles Leclerc’s optimism following the Chinese Grand Prix reflects a rejuvenated Ferrari team that believes the SF-26 has the potential to break the Silver Arrows’ dominance. As the European leg of the season approaches following the Japanese Grand Prix and the Miami Grand Prix, the focus of the fans will be on whether the “innovations” Charles Leclerc mentioned can translate into a sustained title challenge against Mercedes.
