“Ferrari is a team different from the others; it’s like a national team.” With these words, Red Bull’s team principal, Christian Horner, emphasized that on the F1 grid, there is a special team distinguished by its red livery.
Scuderia Ferrari has been competing in Formula 1 since the inception of this category, adorned by the prestige and tradition of the Prancing Horse. The Scuderia of Maranello is currently undergoing another long title drought, a situation experienced in the past when they went 16 seasons from the Constructors’ title in 1984 to the one achieved in 1999. Currently, the Italian side hasn’t celebrated a world title since 2008 when Kimi Raikkonen and Felipe Massa secured the Constructors’ title in a season that ended with heartbreak for the Brazilian driver, who was momentarily the world champion in Brazil after crossing the finish line in first place.
From 2010 to 2023, Mercedes and Red Bull have shared the ‘prize’ at stake, with Ferrari often being competitive but never able to hit the bullseye in the end. The 2024 season will be the first ‘true’ season under the management of Frederic Vasseur, who arrived at the beginning of 2023 and therefore had no influence on the genesis of the SF-23. Horner emphasized that the French manager is certainly competent: “The Italian media is brutal and scrutinizes every movement or move in the Ferrari universe – Christian Horner’s words in an interview with Sky Sports UK – this leads to immense pressure, also because Ferrari is a pillar of Formula 1. Fred Vasseur is a capable manager, and there will be high expectations on Ferrari in 2024.” – the Red Bull team principal explained.
To facilitate Ferrari’s ‘chase,’ the same Red Bull could play a role, at least judging by what Christian Horner added: “I believe we have already passed the point where the performance growth curve of our project was significant. The regulations for the next two years will not change, and we are now at a point of decreasing growth concerning developments. Ferrari, Mercedes, McLaren and Aston Martin could get very close in 2024.” – he concluded.
