Charlie Whiting, the FIA Formula One Race Director, Safety Delegate, Permanent Starter and head of the F1 Technical Department, in which capacities he generally manages the logistics of each F1 Grand Prix, has recently confirmed that the FIA will not intervene over the issue of Scuderia Ferrari’s smoking engines, as seen during the first three races of the 2018 Formula One championship.
While arguably now with the most powerful engine in Formula 1, or at least very close to Mercedes, the Maranello team’s 2018 power unit smokes excessively when it is fired up, which could be noticed from the official pre-season testing sessions in February: “We suffocate in our garage every time they start it,” Mercedes’s team chairman Niki Lauda told Auto Motor und Sport a few weeks ago – “”The FIA should look into it.”
However, Formula One Race Director Charlie Whiting said that despite the smoking, checks have shown that Scuderia Ferrari’s engine is not consuming more oil than it is permitted to. As for the smoking, he explained: “I’m sure they’ll sort that out.”
The 2018 Formula One championship continues next weekend in Azerbaijan, an event that is scheduled to be held between 27 and 29 April 2018 at the Baku City Circuit in Baku, Azerbaijan. The race is due to be the fourth round of the 2018 FIA Formula One World Championship,[2] and the second running of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix as a round of the Formula One World Championship.
