The situation surrounding Charles Leclerc and a potential future with Aston Martin is becoming increasingly clear, as reliable sources now confirm negotiations that could lead to an inevitable departure from Ferrari after the 2026 season. The Monegasque driver could be facing his final year in red, with expectations on Ferrari higher than ever and no more time to waste waiting for a world title that has remained out of reach. The Aston Martin option is becoming more concrete, and an announcement could even arrive during 2026, as discussions are already underway.
Over the summer, car number 16 — accompanied by his manager Nicholas Todt — held talks with three teams, as previously revealed by RMC Motori: McLaren, Mercedes and Aston Martin. In recent weeks, the speculation has intensified around a possible move to Lawrence Stroll’s team. The green squad is investing heavily in the future, especially for the period after Fernando Alonso’s eventual departure. Adrian Newey, designer of the 2026 car, has taken on the role of Team Principal and has assembled a strong group of top engineers capable of continuing his work once he chooses to retire from the spotlight.
After the final race in Abu Dhabi, Charles Leclerc was very clear: in the new regulatory cycle, Ferrari must prove what it is capable of delivering — “now or never.” He also stressed that the first six or seven races of 2026 will show who will dominate the next four-year cycle. He will wait, but authoritative sources are confirming what has been whispered for months.
Duchessa and Sparisci confirm that negotiations exist — everything depends on Ferrari’s 2026 performance
“Aston Martin is thinking about the period after Alonso in 2027. It will happen sooner or later: Fernando wants to drive a Newey car. One of the two or three options Aston Martin wants to pursue is Charles Leclerc, without any doubt. If they fail to sign Verstappen, they will go for Charles Leclerc. We all know how much Charles loves Ferrari. I think we’ve reached a point of wear and tear on one side and a turning point on the other. If the car is competitive next year, everything falls into place. If not, it’s right to look around. As Verstappen teaches, to fight for the World Championship you need at least the second-fastest car.”
These were the words of F1 expert Giuliano Duchessa, founder of AutoRacer.it and contributor to Corriere della Sera, speaking to Sportitalia.it.
Of course, the Dutch driver remains the first choice, but it is well known throughout the paddock that the Monegasque is considered the only driver capable of performing at Max Verstappen’s level if given the right machinery. Charles Leclerc needs a change of environment, and leaving Maranello would be the only logical option if the love he has shown for Ferrari since the junior categories is not rewarded with results. Italian journalist Daniele Sparisci, also writing for Corriere della Sera, shares the same view.
“Without a competitive car, leaving would be inevitable. In a nightmare season, the only certainty was that Charles came out stronger in terms of driving and leadership. He expected to beat Hamilton, but not by this margin. He is on Aston Martin’s radar, and the team has promised its sponsors a top driver for 2027. Adrian Newey is revolutionizing the organization, and he would have done the same at Maranello if they hadn’t passed on the opportunity to hire him. In England they have invested billions in infrastructure and talent, and they have taken engines from Honda. These are expensive bets to return to the top.” – he explained.
We will have to wait and see.
The first races of 2026 will tell the whole story. Fred Vasseur has already warned that Ferrari will face some early difficulties with the new regulations, but will the work done over the winter be enough to fight at the sharp end? If not, Charles Leclerc’s lifelong dream of winning the world championship in red could come to an end – and a new era in British racing green might just begin.
