Contrary to what has been rumoured during the last few days, Charles Leclerc’s Ferrari only runs a new turbo in Azerbaijan. The MGU-H will not be changed.
In Baku, the Maranello team is called to a strong reaction after the technical issue of Montmeló and the strategic errors in Monte Carlo. The Azerbaijan capital is a circuit that places Red Bull in the role of favorite and that requires a great level of power from the engine, considering the very long straight of the finish line.
Despite this, Ferrari does not want to go for its third MGU-H just yet. Turbo and MGU-H are the two components that caused Charles Leclerc’s retirement in Barcelona. The decision was also made considering that by fitting the third element of both the turbo and MGU-H, Charles Leclerc would already reach the limit and would be at risk of a grid penalty at this early stage of the season. Ferrari is now ‘at risk’ only with Charles Leclerc’s turbo.
The FIA has also formalized the change of power units on the Red Bull cars of Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez. For the Milton Keynes drivers it is the second power unit of the 2022 Formula 1 season.
