The fastest overall time set at the end of pre-season testing by Charles Leclerc has restored a sense of optimism among Ferrari fans. After an underwhelming campaign and a relatively quiet winter, few expected to see the Scuderia immediately stand out during Formula 1 winter testing in Bahrain.
While statistics rarely reward the so-called “winter champion” when it comes to the actual Formula 1 world title, Leclerc’s attitude on track clearly reflected his determination to return to fighting at the very front of the grid. It may not be a coincidence that Riccardo Patrese specifically highlighted the almost visible anger with which the Monegasque driver attacked the Bahrain sessions, ultimately setting the benchmark time.
Ferrari, Leclerc’s anger could be a strength
“Charles Leclerc,” the former Italian driver explained to talkSPORT BET Slots, “is angry because he hasn’t yet won the championship, something that both he and many other people expected him to achieve. He really wants to become world champion, he’s in the right mindset and, if he has a competitive car, he could genuinely go head-to-head with someone like Max Verstappen.”
Like his former colleague Johnny Herbert, Patrese remains slightly cautious, pointing out that in the past decade Ferrari has topped winter testing on six occasions without converting that promise into a world championship triumph.
“Ferrari performed well at the end of testing. For our fans, that’s positive, but many times they have shown they are very strong at the beginning of the year and in testing, even if nothing positive then happened during the season. So we have to wait and see what will happen.”
The message is clear: Leclerc’s hunger and motivation could prove to be valuable assets for Ferrari in the upcoming Formula 1 season, but only consistent performance over the full championship will determine whether the Scuderia can truly fight for the title once again.
