At the end of the first pre-season testing session which rook place at the Circuit de Catalunya in Barcelona, Scuderia Ferrari Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc was able to make a very careful and detailed analysis of the changes in terms of driveability of the new cars when they find themselves chasing a rival car (here you can find the details shared by Charles with his assessment of how the 2022 Formula care behave at certain distances between the cars).
Damon Hill’s skepticism
A comment that surprised Damon Hill, the 1996 Formula 1 world champion, who told the F1 Nation podcast:
“It’s quite interesting. I’m trying to imagine how he’s managed to get within half a tenth of a car in the shakedown, and been able to ascertain whether it’s better or not. He’s obviously out there pretty close to the car in front, but he’s found out that it’s much better, much closer. What he didn’t do was differentiate in what speed corners [he was able to follow], but I’m presuming he means medium to fast corners there.” – the former Formula 1 driver said.

Regardless of Damon Hill‘s skepticism, the situation looks better than in the 2021 Formula 1 season. Fernando Alonso’s comments were also very positive about it. Obviously, these comments were made after only the first pre-season testing session and we will have to wait for the first races of the year to get a better idea. But in the meantime, it appears that Formula 1 has gone in the right direction.
