Charles Leclerc has indicated that excitement is currently the prevailing emotion across Formula 1 following the first on-track appearance of the 2026 cars. After completing Ferrari’s initial shakedown at the Circuit de Catalunya, the Monegasque driver underlined the sense of anticipation surrounding the new technical era.
During the three permitted days of running in Barcelona, Ferrari accumulated a total of 435 laps, placing the Scuderia second overall in terms of mileage, behind only Mercedes. The strong lap count highlighted Ferrari’s emphasis on reliability and system validation rather than outright performance at this early stage of development.
Ferrari is entering the 2026 season hoping that the sweeping regulatory overhaul will help reshape the competitive order. With the team’s last Formula 1 championship success dating back to 2008, the new rules represent a major opportunity to reset and close the gap to rivals McLaren, Mercedes and Red Bull.
According to Charles Leclerc, the mood inside the Ferrari garage is one of positive anticipation rather than expectation. He suggested that the scale of the regulation changes has created a unique environment in which both drivers and engineers must rapidly adapt to unfamiliar concepts, particularly in relation to energy deployment and power management.
The Ferrari driver explained that energy management will play a far more decisive role in 2026 than in previous seasons, forcing drivers to rethink their approach during both qualifying and race conditions. He stressed that mastering these elements will be essential for extracting performance from the new generation of Formula 1 cars.
Despite Ferrari’s productive showing in Barcelona, Charles Leclerc made it clear that it is far too early to draw conclusions about the true competitive picture. He pointed out that many teams deliberately avoided performance runs during the shakedown, instead prioritising system checks, reliability tests and baseline aerodynamic correlation.
The Ferrari driver noted that a clearer understanding of the pecking order is more likely to emerge during the upcoming pre-season tests in Bahrain, where teams will have additional track time to explore setup variations and performance windows. Both Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc are expected to focus on refining the SF-26 package during those sessions.
The Monegasque driver emphasised that Ferrari’s immediate priority is internal development rather than comparisons with rival teams. He suggested that the team is concentrating on learning as much as possible from each test session before assessing where it truly stands within the field.
With the Barcelona shakedown complete and further testing on the horizon, Ferrari enters the next phase of preparation with cautious optimism. The combination of strong early reliability, extensive mileage and a renewed sense of motivation has reinforced the belief that the 2026 season could mark an important turning point for the Scuderia.
