Charles Leclerc says the prospect of Max Verstappen joining Ferrari would not intimidate him, arguing that sharing the team with his long-time rival could create a remarkable Formula 1 story. The two drivers have competed against each other since their karting days and have repeatedly delivered spectacular battles whenever they have been given equally competitive machinery.
Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen have often thrilled spectators with intense wheel-to-wheel contests in Formula 1. Their battles have produced different winners over the years, reflecting the talent, aggression and mutual determination that have defined their rivalry since childhood.
Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen’s rivalry stretches back to karting
After spending several seasons with a car capable of fighting for the championship, Max Verstappen remains without a victory in 2026. Charles Leclerc, meanwhile, ended a lengthy winless run by returning to the top step of the podium at Silverstone.
Charles Leclerc has also recently confirmed a new Ferrari contract, while Lewis Hamilton is set to remain alongside the Monegasque driver in 2027. From 2028, however, an opportunity could theoretically emerge for Max Verstappen to move to Ferrari, although such a scenario remains entirely hypothetical.
Against that background, Charles Leclerc was asked to describe his relationship with his lifelong rival and how he would feel about potentially sharing the Ferrari garage with Max Verstappen in the future.
Charles Leclerc explains how his relationship with Max Verstappen changed
Charles Leclerc acknowledged that friendship disappears once drivers lower their visors and begin competing on track. Away from the circuit, however, maturity and life experience have gradually transformed the relationship between Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen.
“Are there friends on the track? Definitely not. When the visor comes down, friendship no longer exists,” Charles Leclerc told Sky. “But our relationship has changed. We have grown up, we are much more mature and life has changed considerably since we started.”
Charles Leclerc explained that emotions were far more intense when the pair were younger. Incidents on the circuit influenced how they viewed each other personally, making it difficult for either driver to separate their fierce rivalry from the person behind the helmet.
“When you are young, you experience everything at a thousand miles an hour. Because of what happened on track, I was convinced that he was a bad person, and he thought the same about me,” Charles Leclerc continued. “As you grow older, you understand that people are different away from what happens on the track, so our relationship has changed.”
Why Max Verstappen would not intimidate Charles Leclerc at Ferrari
Charles Leclerc has already shared the Ferrari garage with several highly rated and demanding teammates. That experience means the possibility of racing alongside a four-time world champion such as Max Verstappen does not concern him.
“He is an exceptional driver who has won four world championships,” Charles Leclerc added. “Fortunately for me—and I have always said that I consider this a great privilege—I have had the opportunity to race alongside teammates who have always been extremely strong, such as Lewis Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel and Carlos Sainz. So no, he does not scare me.”
Rather than viewing a potential Ferrari partnership purely as a threat, Charles Leclerc believes it would complete a compelling journey that began when the two future Formula 1 stars were still competing in karting.
“If it were ever to happen one day, it would also be a great story because we started together in 2010 and competed in all the karting categories together. So why not?” Charles Leclerc concluded.
A Ferrari driver pairing featuring Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen therefore remains only a possible future scenario. For now, Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton are set to continue together, but the history between Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen ensures that any suggestion of a future partnership will continue to attract considerable attention.
