According to Ralf Schumacher, the rivalry between Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton can only bring benefits to Ferrari. Compared to last season, which marked a rather underwhelming debut in red for the seven-time world champion, the situation this year appears to have changed significantly.
The British driver now seems much more comfortable with the current generation of cars, which has allowed him to raise his level in comparison with his teammate. In particular, in Shanghai and Suzuka, the two delivered exciting on-track battles that highlighted the strengths of both drivers and thrilled Formula 1 fans.
The good news for the Briton and Ferrari is that in one of these battles, the former Mercedes driver came out on top, proving that he can still make a concrete contribution to the Scuderia’s campaign. According to Ralf Schumacher, Lewis Hamilton’s improvement has forced Leclerc to reassess his own position and stay even more focused.
Ralf Schumacher on Charles Leclerc: “Hamilton pushed him out of his comfort zone”
This is an aspect that, according to the German former driver, can only please Frédéric Vasseur, who now has two drivers essentially operating at a very similar level.
“Their battles have been so competitive, just look at their faces,” said the former Williams driver on the Backstage Boxengasse podcast.
“I saw Leclerc at a gala evening and he seemed quite relaxed. But I think deep down he is not fully satisfied, because the ‘old guy’ has now come very close,” he added, referring to Hamilton.
“A big advantage for Ferrari is that this year they can rely on two performing drivers at more or less the same level, and above all, both are pushing in roughly the same direction when it comes to development.”
“If all of this were to end, it would become a big problem. For now, the atmosphere is very harmonious. Hamilton has found himself again. Charles is also pushing, which is equally important.”
Ferrari: a delicate balance that can make the difference
Internal competition can become a performance accelerator, as long as it remains within a clear balance: collaboration in development, freedom to fight on track, and calm management from the pit wall.
This is why Frédéric Vasseur’s role will be decisive. He must maintain this fine line between rivalry and cohesion. If Hamilton appears to have regained speed and confidence, it is equally clear that Leclerc has no intention of giving ground to his teammate. It is precisely from this tension, still controlled but ever-present, that a step forward could emerge.
The season will show whether this dual leadership remains an advantage or whether, as the stakes rise, it begins to show cracks. For now, however, Maranello can enjoy a rare luxury in Formula 1: having two drivers both capable of pushing beyond their limits and, in doing so, lifting the entire team with them.
The shift in Ferrari’s internal hierarchy highlights a fascinating psychological battle within the garage. By pushing Charles Leclerc to find new levels of focus, Lewis Hamilton is proving that his arrival in Maranello was as much about cultural change as it was about pure lap time. As long as Frédéric Vasseur can keep the peace, this “harmonious rivalry” might be exactly what Ferrari needs to finally bridge the gap to the frontrunners.
