Red Bull’s Sergio Perez deprived Charles Leclerc of a free practice hat-trick on the streets of Monte Carlo ahead of the qualifying session for the 2022 Monaco Grand Prix, as the Red Bull driver pipped his Ferrari rival in the final stages of the third free practice session. The two drivers had frantically traded fast runs in the closing minutes of FP3, with the Mexican having the last word and emerging as a serious contender for pole position, which as always will be extremely important given the track characteristics and layout of the Monaco circuit.
Ferrari continue to have better pace in the middle part of the lap but Sergio Perez was unable to be matched in the first sector and final sectors, suggesting that he was able to keep his tyres in the right window.
Behind the leading duo, Carlos Sainz and Max Verstappen completed the Red Bull-Ferrari private reunion while AlphaTauri’s Pierre Gasly and McLaren’s Lando Norris rounded off the top-six.
According to Formula 1 journalist and analyst Giuliano Duchessa, after the power unit failure last weekend in the Spanish Grand Prix, Scuderia Ferrari Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc used the MGU-H and turbocharger from PU1 during the third free practice session for the 2022 Monaco Grand Prix earlier today. No component changes have been recorded so far this weekend, which means Ferrari has decided not use any components from PU3 so far.
Qualifying in Monaco takes place at 3pm UK time.
