20-year-old Monégasque racing driver Charles Leclerc talks about being teammates with Sebastian Vettel from the 2019 Formula One season, how he thinks they will work together and what role he wants to play at Scuderia Ferrari next year:
How can Sebastian Vettel imagine you as a teammate?
Charles Leclerc: “Teammates should be in a good relationship with each other in my opinion. I think that’s the most important thing. Obviously, in the end, it is the interaction between the competition and the teamwork which will bring the development of the car forward. I am confident that we will find this compromise very soon.”
Next season your teammate will no longer be Marcus Ericsson, but Sebastian Vettel. Are you looking forward to such a challenge, or does the thought make you swallow hard?
Charles Leclerc: “No, I’m extremely happy about that. Learning from such a champion is an incredible opportunity for me. In that sense, I can not wait to work alongside Sebastian.”
Kimi Raikkonen has accepted his no. 2 role at Ferrari. What role do you want to play in 2019? And is it really good for a younger and less experienced driver to go “all-in”?
Charles Leclerc: “As I said before, I will try the best possible. There are rules in every team. For example, if at one point in the championship one driver fights for the world title and the other does not. Should it be me who is in second position, I will support my teammate. But at the beginning of the season I will definitely go all-in.”
