The 2025 Italian Grand Prix at Monza offers Charles Leclerc and Ferrari a crucial opportunity to recover from a disastrous weekend at Zandvoort. After a double retirement in the Netherlands, the Scuderia will be desperate to deliver a strong performance on home soil in front of their passionate Tifosi.
Ferrari’s weekend at the Dutch GP was marred by crashes for both Leclerc and his teammate Lewis Hamilton at turn three. Despite a significant overhaul of the SF-25 setup, the team’s car remained vulnerable on high-speed sections, limiting their ability to recover. Leclerc qualified fifth while Hamilton took seventh, but both struggled to make up ground once the race began.
Hamilton experienced a highly unusual incident on lap 23, losing control of the rear on the wide line of the banking at turn three, resulting in a crash that ended his race. Meanwhile, Leclerc had attempted an undercut strategy by pitting early to gain positions on the cars ahead, but the deployment of the safety car nullified the advantage he sought.
Later, after switching to soft tyres, Leclerc collided with Kimi Antonelli, spinning into the barriers and retiring from the race. The result left Ferrari without points and in urgent need of redemption, with Monza presenting the perfect stage to bounce back.
Charles Leclerc has a strong track record at Monza, having secured two Italian Grand Prix victories for Ferrari—first in 2019 and then in the previous season—using a smart one-stop strategy to outpace McLaren. Ahead of this year’s race, the Monegasque driver expressed his desire to claim a third victory at Ferrari’s home circuit, emphasizing the special connection with the fans during the team’s “Drive to Monza” media event at the Royal Palace in Milan.
Leclerc conveyed his excitement to Sky Sport Italia, explaining that winning again at Monza, with the support of Ferrari’s loyal fans, would be a truly extraordinary experience. He highlighted the cultural significance of the number three in both French and Italian, hoping it would mark a third triumph on Ferrari’s home turf.
Despite the disappointment at Zandvoort, Charles Leclerc demonstrated his racing skill with a daring overtake on Mercedes’ George Russell following the first safety car restart. The maneuver saw him drive around the outside at turn 11 and complete the pass at turn 12, skimming close to the gravel and narrowly avoiding contact. Leclerc reflected on the move, acknowledging that instinct guided his decision and that taking calculated risks is part of racing at the highest level.
Jacques Villeneuve had criticized Charles Leclerc, suggesting that the 27-year-old’s chances of becoming a world champion were fading. However, the Monegasque appears determined to prove his critics wrong, channeling frustration from Zandvoort into motivation for Monza. He emphasized that while the overtake did not result in a podium, it was a moment of pure racing instinct and personal satisfaction, highlighting his commitment to pushing boundaries even in challenging circumstances.
As Ferrari approaches their home Grand Prix, Charles Leclerc’s experience and ambition, combined with the passionate support of the Tifosi, will be central to the team’s hopes of a successful weekend. With Monza’s high-speed straights and iconic corners, both the driver and the team aim to transform past disappointments into a memorable performance in front of the home crowd.
