Scuderia Ferrari Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc has agreed with his title rival Max Verstappen on the matter and the continued debate over bouncing and porpoising.
The governing body for world motor sport decided to take action ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal and confirmed it would introduce a technical directive with the goal of limiting or completely eliminating porpoising.
Yet Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc does not believe this is the best approach and said the FIA should not be introducing any new rules to bring changes to this unique phenomenon even if it leads to less bouncing.
The Monegasque driver, just like his title rival Max Verstappen, feels that it is not right to introduce new rules on such an important matter on this stage of the 2022 Formula 1 championship, only due to the fact that some teams were not able to manage this issue and were affected harder by the problem than others.
There have been many different views when it comes to the porpoising debate. Some F1 drivers continue to point out that they are suffering to some degree, but not everyone agrees with each other based on their comments in recent interviews.
Charles Leclerc’s Maranello teammate Carlos Sainz and Mercedes’ George Russell proved to be two of the most vocal in asking for some action to be made. Carlos Sainz strongly felt the FIA should listen to the drivers and not so much to the teams.
“That’s why we asked the FIA to look at it and not listen too much to the teams, but to the drivers. It has now come to a point where we are all having a hard time with it,” – the Spanish driver said a few days ago.
Red Bull’s Max Verstappen admitted he had a different view on the matter and is categorically opposed to any possible changes.
“It’s disappointing that the rules are being changed, again, in the middle of the season,” the Dutchman stated – “It’s not even about hitting us harder or less hard than other teams, but it shouldn’t be a team complains about it and then suddenly they change the rules around it. If you can’t develop the car properly, that’s your fault, not the regulations’ fault. This is just not correct.”
Charles Leclerc, whose performance in this first part of the 2022 Formula 1 season has not been affected by the porpoising effect, believes no changes should be introduced and agrees with Max Verstappen, despite the fact that he agrees bouncing may be uncomfortable for some drivers.

“I understand Russell’s point because if you saw Lewis climbing out of the car in Baku, for example, it looks very bad. You can feel Hamilton’s pain and that is unacceptable.” – he said
On the other hand, the Ferrari driver finds it odd that all of Scuderia Ferrari’s hard work could become useless due to these new rules introduced mid-year.
“On the other hand, you should not underestimate how much work has been done by the team in recent months to overcome the problem. Since the first time we tested these cars, that has been our main priority. As a team we have worked very hard to solve these problems and we have already improved a lot. Now all that hard work would go in the bin, all because one team struggles more with their car than the rest? That’s how I look at it. I understand that it is bad at Mercedes, I just also think that there may be other solutions.” – Charles Leclerc concluded.
