Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc has adjusted his outlook on the 2025 Formula 1 title battle after watching McLaren’s internal rivalry take a new turn. Lando Norris has reclaimed the top spot in the drivers’ standings, overtaking teammate Oscar Piastri by a single point as the season enters its decisive phase.
For much of 2025, the fight for the Formula 1 world championship has been a two-way contest between Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, with both McLaren drivers alternating at the top. However, Red Bull’s Max Verstappen has reignited his championship challenge in recent weeks. With a series of strong performances, including multiple race wins, the Dutchman has cut his deficit to just 36 points behind Norris as he chases a fifth world title.
Earlier in the season, Norris made headlines by ending Max Verstappen’s long reign at the top of the F1 standings — a streak that had lasted an astonishing 1,029 days. Oscar Piastri quickly responded by seizing the championship lead only a month later. His reign, however, proved short-lived, lasting just over six months before Norris reclaimed control after a dominant display in Mexico City.
Oscar Piastri’s recent performances have raised questions about whether he can sustain his title bid under pressure. After holding a commanding 34-point advantage over Norris and a 104-point gap to Verstappen following the Dutch Grand Prix, the Australian has struggled to maintain form. He has secured only a single podium finish in the last five rounds, while Verstappen has taken three victories and Norris one. The sudden drop in momentum has reshaped perceptions across the paddock — including Charles Leclerc’s.
Leclerc’s confidence in Piastri begins to fade
Charles Leclerc had previously backed Piastri to emerge as the 2025 Formula 1 world champion, expressing that view as recently as October during the United States Grand Prix weekend. At that time, the Australian appeared to have a clear edge, arriving at the Circuit of the Americas with a 22-point lead over Norris. The Monegasque felt that the Australian was managing the pressure impressively for a second-year driver.
Even earlier in the summer, before the Hungarian Grand Prix, Charles Leclerc had described Oscar Piastri as having a slight but meaningful advantage in the title fight. But the McLaren dynamic has shifted dramatically. Norris’s resurgence — capped by a flawless drive to victory at the Mexico City Grand Prix — has caused the Monegasque to rethink his stance. During the pre-race press conference at Interlagos, the Ferrari driver explained that he was now uncertain about which of the McLaren drivers would come out on top. He suggested that the pair were essentially level, making it impossible to call a clear favorite at this stage of the championship.
Norris, Piastri and Verstappen redefine the 2025 title battle
The evolution of the title fight has been shaped not only by McLaren’s internal rivalry but also by Red Bull’s renewed competitiveness. Max Verstappen has capitalized on recent aerodynamic updates, including new floor and front wing designs, helping him secure wins in Italy, Azerbaijan, and the United States, along with victory in the Sprint race at COTA. His consistent form has reignited hopes within Red Bull that their star driver could still defend his crown despite a challenging start to the season.
Meanwhile, Lando Norris has consolidated his case for the 2025 drivers’ title. His commanding victory in Mexico — from pole position and with a margin exceeding 30 seconds — showcased both his pace and composure under pressure. It was also a race that exposed the growing divide within McLaren, as Oscar Piastri endured another difficult weekend. The Australian qualified eighth, half a second slower than Norris, and started seventh after Carlos Sainz’s penalty. He ultimately finished fifth, far from the form that once made him championship favorite.
Piastri’s setbacks have extended beyond raw pace. His campaign has been disrupted by costly incidents, including a crash at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix and an unfortunate collision with Norris at the start of the Sprint race in Austin. These moments have chipped away at his momentum just as the season entered its most critical stretch. In contrast, Norris has steadily capitalized on every opportunity, turning consistency and clean weekends into championship points.
Leclerc’s evolving perspective reflects a shifting championship landscape
For Charles Leclerc, who has been observing the title battle from Ferrari’s camp, the fluctuating form of the McLaren duo has become one of the defining stories of the 2025 season. While he once saw Oscar Piastri as the likelier champion, recent results have forced him to acknowledge Norris’s growing authority. The Monegasque driver’s revised outlook underscores how unpredictable this year’s championship has become — a rare, genuine three-way contest between two McLarens and a resurgent Max Verstappen.
As Formula 1 heads into the final rounds of 2025, the tension continues to rise. Lando Norris appears to hold the psychological edge, Max Verstappen is closing fast with Red Bull’s upgrades, and Oscar Piastri faces the challenge of recovering confidence and form. With Charles Leclerc himself eager to return Ferrari to the podium fight, his changed view mirrors the broader uncertainty that now surrounds the outcome of this year’s gripping title race.
