Choosing a new team was difficult for Carlos Sainz, and Charles Leclerc shared details about the challenging period his Maranello teammate went through.
When Scuderia Ferrari announced Lewis Hamilton for the 2025 Formula 1 championship, the Spaniard suddenly found himself without a seat. This marked the beginning of intense months of negotiations, during which the #55 driver had to balance his on-track activities with decisions about his future. In interviews with the media ahead of the Dutch Grand Prix weekend, Charles Leclerc explained how he supported his teammate.
“I have a very good relationship with Carlos. However, when it comes to making these kinds of decisions, obviously, I’m not the first person he talks to,” he admitted. “He mostly discussed it with his father, with his team. But we did talk about it. Sometimes he would ask me what I would have done in his place, and we had those kinds of discussions.” – the Monegasque driver explained.
Despite their relationship, the two remain rivals on the track. “At the same time, we stayed competitors. So it’s always about balancing our friendship with those moments when he opens up to me.” – Charles Leclerc pointed out.
Regarding his future and the decision about his next team, Carlos Sainz “talked more about it with his team, which is absolutely normal,” Charles Leclerc continued. “So yes, we had these conversations, but I’m quite sure I didn’t influence his choice at all,” the Monegasque concluded.
Carlos Sainz announced his new adventure with Williams at the end of July through a message on social media. The Spaniard also shared how James Vowles convinced him to embrace the project and the long months of negotiations.
