What a risk for Charles Leclerc in the pre-qualifying of the Monaco GP: the Ferrari driver feared for his home weekend due to a last-minute engine issue.
Leclerc excelled in the Monaco Grand Prix qualifying. The Ferrari driver managed to secure the crucial pole position in his home race. Yet, a last-minute problem could have jeopardized the entire weekend for the Monegasque driver, born in ’97.
Charles Leclerc first revealed this in a press conference, and then Frederic Vasseur confirmed it to Sky Sport Italia. The Ferrari driver admitted his fear before the key session in Monaco: “It had been an incredible weekend until the third free practice when I had an engine problem.”
Ferrari mechanics replaced the power unit. Leclerc spoke in the conference: “There was an engine change at the very last minute. It was quite tricky, but fortunately, everything went well, and there were no consequences for my weekend.”
“We didn’t know if we would be able to replace the engine in time before qualifying,” admitted the Cavallino driver post-qualifying.
The issue was caused by an anomaly in the sensors of Leclerc’s SF-24 power unit. Precaution is never too much, and Fred Vasseur’s team opted for the replacement.
