After the dream of victory on the streets of Monte Carlo in the Monaco Grand Prix, the race in Canada quickly turned into a nightmare for Charles Leclerc. After yesterday’s disastrous qualifying, in the first laps of the race, the Monegasque’s engine started to have problems, and the pit wall carefully guided the driver, who had to drive with extra caution. After attempting to run with hard tires and damage to the front wing, car number 16 was retired.
Speaking to Italian journalist Mara Sangiorgio, Charles Leclerc was very dejected: “Changing the engine during the weekend was already not a good sign. I don’t know what the problem was, but I was going 1.2 seconds slower on the straights. It was a difficult race to manage because I had a thousand things to do on the steering wheel in addition to driving. This was fine until the first part of the race because with the rain we had the same pace as those around us. On the dry track, you have fewer risks, and everyone was passing me: I knew it was over then. Today the problem was only the engine; yesterday’s mistake is another thing to analyze. Yesterday we lost the race, but also today with this issue.” – the Monegasque driver explained.
With today’s retirement in the Canadian Grand Prix, Charles Leclerc slips to -54 points behind Max Verstappen, who, unlike his teammate, managed to bring the car home and secure a masterful victory with very few mistakes, thus significantly extending his lead in the 2024 Formula 1 championship.
