Charles Leclerc given green light for Gilles Villeneuve tribute livery at Canadian Grand Prix
Following the granting of permission, Charles Leclerc has reassured everyone that “everything is fine” regarding his plan to showcase the Gilles Villeneuve tribute livery at the Canadian Grand Prix this weekend. The design pays homage to Gilles Villeneuve’s iconic racing career, reminiscent of the one he used during his time in Formula 1, featuring a striking red base color adorned with sleek black stripes.
Initially, there were concerns from the Villeneuve family regarding the inclusion of Ferrari and sponsorship logos, as they had not been consulted prior to the unveiling of Charles Leclerc’s special design on Thursday.
The specially crafted helmet serves as a tribute to the late Canadian racing legend, Gilles Villeneuve, who achieved his first victory for Ferrari at the Montreal circuit back in 1978. In honor of his legacy, the circuit was named after him following his tragic passing during the 1982 Belgian Grand Prix at Zolder.
During the first free practice session, Charles Leclerc proudly displayed the tribute Ferrari helmet, but later switched back to his customary design for the second practice session. However, prior to the qualifying session at the 4.361-kilometre Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve in Montreal, a meeting with the Villeneuve family (excluding 1997 World Champion Jacques) confirmed that all concerns had been resolved, paving the way for a respectful and fitting tribute to be paid.
“It was definitely a nice moment,” Charles Leclerc said in an interview for the media on Saturday in Montreal – “I wanted to do this tribute in good faith because he is a legend of Formula 1 and Scuderia Ferrari, so it was good to meet them. Everything is fine now, it is all good.” – the Ferrari driver concluded.
