For Scuderia Ferrari Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc Friday practice for the 2021 Mexican Grand Prix did things did not run smoothly, with a few issues hampering his progress at Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez.
The Ferrari driver began proceedings by complaining about the significant amount of dust on track when practice running started, with the track not having been used for motorsport for well over a year. That slippery surface caused an early spin for Charles, as he lost control of his SF21 car in Turn 16, spinning his Ferrari around and causing damage to the rear wing in the process. Charles still made it back to the pits, as the Maranello team’s mechanics were able to repair the car and get him back on track.
In the second free practice session at Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, Charles Leclerc also informed the team that his car was “bouncing like crazy” and he could not control it at high speed, then subsequently reporting an engine problem which forced him back into the garage.

At the end of a difficult first day in Mexico, the Monegasque driver was asked about this chances for another solid result at a venue where the Italian side should be strong:
“I’d like more a victory, then I don’t care about the other positions too much. Then for sure it’s been a good year when I look at the performance, but for sure when I look at the points I’m a little disappointed because there were some missed opportunities as I said many times. On paper it’s a bit more positive track for us than Austin, for the car of this year. Then every year is different, but, yes, it’s more positive than the last race. So let’s hope that’s really the case and that we can finish with both the cars ahead of McLaren. And as I said, if there’s an opportunity for the podium, even better.” – Charles said, as reported by Sky Italia.
