As the most famous team in motor racing, Scuderia Ferrari is not in the habit of taking chances on young talent. So the hiring of Charles Leclerc from the rival Sauber team at the age of 21, to partner lead driver Sebastian Vettel next season, is a special moment for the Italian racing stable.
With last year’s F1 season under his belt, Charles Leclerc has shown all the qualities of a future champion — not that you will catch the Monégasque driver speculating about that: “No, I don’t think about it,” he says. “Since the decision has been made, I’m obviously extremely happy and proud to be the chosen one for this [Ferrari] seat
.”
The talented, young Monégasque driver also talked about media pressure and politics at the Maranello team: “I haven’t faced too much politics and I just try and be as honest as possible with the media so there’s no politics going on” – he explained, as reported by the British and Italian media – “There will always be a little bit but for now I haven’t faced much. At the beginning, it was quite intimidating to speak to so many people because you know that everything you are going to say is going to be analyzed not only by engineers but by so many people. Not scary but intimidating, then you get used to it.” – Charles Leclerc added.
The 21-year-old Monégasque racing driver also revealed key breakthrough in his rookie Formula 1 season with Sauber: “Definitely the first three races, in which I’ve learned massively, I’ve worked extremely hard. There were things which were just not going right, and after the first three races we finally understood them and made a big step.” – Charles Leclerc concluded.
