Scuderia Ferrari Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc is preparing for the 2022 Formula 1 cars to be “big time different” to drive this championship, as compared to its predecessors.
As was leave the 2021 Formula 1 season behind and welcome the new year, we also focus on the new 2022 campaign which represents a new era for the sports taking into consideration the completely new technical regulation. The new rules are aimed at bringing the Formula 1 field even much closer than what we saw in recent years and shift the focus from cars to drivers’ skills when it comes to wheel-to-wheel racing.
Another big step forward alongside the regulations changes should be the new Pirelli 18-inch tyres, that will be introduced this year in order to replace the 13-inch variety. A few weeks ago, after the final race of the season, which took place in Abu Dhabi, Charles Leclerc stuck around to complete many more important laps at the Yas Marina circuit a special testing sessions that gave drivers the opportunity to experience the new Pirelli compounds.

“It’s quite a bit different. This one is basically adapted to fit those bigger tyres on, but apart from that it’s the 2019 car.” – the Scuderia Ferrari driver explained, after completing 87 laps in a Ferrari mule car in post-season testing at the Yas Marina track – “So it’s going to be big time different, but I think we’ll only know once we put the real 2022 car on track and do the correlation from the simulator to reality.” – the Monegasque driver added.
The new Pirelli tyres also feature smaller sidewalls compared to its predecessor and Charles Leclerc believes this will lead to even more challenges for teams and drivers in the 2022 Formula One championship:
“It makes it quite tricky. It’s challenging for us drivers, and I think it will be more challenging next year to drive those cars. Overall, it probably has a bit of a bigger window to work; especially in cold conditions, it feels quite good. But it’s also quite tricky when you lose the car in the high-speed [corners] especially.” – Scuderia Ferrari Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc concluded.
