Charles Leclerc has been cleared to race in Madrid after successfully completing further medical checks following his heavy crash at the Italian Grand Prix. The Ferrari driver is therefore expected to take part in the inaugural Formula 1 weekend at the new Madring circuit, removing the uncertainty that had surrounded his fitness after Monza.
Leclerc’s Italian Grand Prix ended abruptly on the second lap when he lost control of the SF-26 at Parabolica and hit the barriers at high speed. The impact brought his race to an immediate end and triggered a red flag, but the Monegasque was able to climb out of the damaged Ferrari without assistance.
Charles Leclerc cleared for Madrid after further medical checks
FIA doctors carried out initial examinations shortly after the accident, with medical staff at Monza finding no injuries. There was nevertheless some caution over Leclerc’s condition ahead of the next race because he had reported a temporary problem with his vision, including reduced sight in his right eye.
The issue improved quickly and Leclerc was able to leave the medical centre without further complications. He later underwent additional checks as Ferrari waited for confirmation over whether he would be able to return to the cockpit in Madrid. His condition had previously left Charles Leclerc’s participation in the Spanish Grand Prix in doubt.
According to GPBlog.com, the latest examinations have now resulted in Leclerc being declared fit to compete. The Ferrari driver is therefore set to participate fully in the Madrid weekend as scheduled.
Leclerc’s vision issue had created uncertainty after Monza
Although the first medical assessment produced no indication of injury, the temporary eyesight problem meant Ferrari still needed clarity before the next Grand Prix. Leclerc had already explained the vision issue and need for further checks after his Monza accident, making the final clearance especially important with another race weekend approaching.
The confirmation allows the Maranello team to move forward with its normal driver line-up of Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton. It also removes one potential complication after an Italian Grand Prix that delivered little for Ferrari in front of its home supporters.
Ferrari receives welcome news before difficult Madrid challenge
Ferrari heads to Spain needing to recover from a disappointing Monza result. Leclerc failed to finish after the crash, while Lewis Hamilton could only manage sixth place, leaving the Scuderia with an immediate need to respond at the following round.
Madrid will provide a very different challenge. The new Madring circuit is making its Formula 1 debut and will present teams and drivers with an unfamiliar venue. That places additional importance on a smooth preparation programme, making Leclerc’s medical clearance particularly valuable for Ferrari.
With his participation now expected to go ahead as planned, the Monegasque can turn his attention back to competition rather than recovery. The Spanish weekend gives both Leclerc and Hamilton an early opportunity to put Ferrari’s difficult Italian Grand Prix behind them and begin rebuilding momentum at a new circuit.
