Charles Leclerc heads to Mexico
The weekend in Austin was essentially one to forget for Charles Leclerc. The Monegasque did secure his 21st career pole position, but as has become all too common, he couldn’t convert it into a win. The fault lies with an SF-23 that still has the same limitations in race pace, which were glimpsed in Texas during the Sprint and reiterated more strongly during the race.
The disqualification handed down by the stewards after the United States Grand Prix at COTA was just the latest blow of Charles Leclerc’s weekend, who also raced while loaded with painkillers due to a wisdom tooth infection. Charles Leclerc has no choice but to turn the page and hope for a better weekend in Mexico, a circuit that hasn’t been particularly favorable to #16. He clinched a pole here in 2019 but has never made it to the podium.
Charles Leclerc’s comments:
“Mexico is always a special place. The passion there is incredible, and it’s one of the races with the most fans. I’ve always liked Mexico; I went there for New Year’s two years ago, and it was beautiful. The race is no exception; I’ve always enjoyed going there. The stadium area is incredible; there are so many people and so much extravagance, especially when we do the parade lap. We can feel how much passion there is in the stands; it’s incredible. My favorite section is the central one, which is done at high speed, but the final one is also beautiful for the Arena. I love the Arena, a bit less the corners there. If we talk about drivability, I prefer the second sector; if we talk about passion and atmosphere, it’s the third sector.” – the Ferrari driver explained, ahead of the Mexico City Grand Prix, which takes place this weekend.
In the drivers’ standings, the Monegasque is 20 points behind his teammate Carlos Sainz and even risks dropping to seventh from the attack of George Russell, now 8 points behind. These margins would undoubtedly have been smaller without the disqualification in Austin, but Charles Leclerc certainly won’t pay too much attention to the standings in a disastrous season and will aim for the best possible result to redeem the last disappointment.
