A rivalry born in karting and carried over to Formula 1 between Red Bull’s Max Verstappen and Scuderia Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc. In the midst of many challenges on the track, their relationship has evolved over the years, as stated by the Monegasque driver himself.
“It is much better than when we were younger. But it is also very different. When we were young, we hated each other (laughs),” Charles Leclerc admitted in an interview with the Austrian broadcaster ORF. “We have competed against each other several times on the track and had several incidents. Surely, that didn’t help.” – the Ferrari man explained.
“But today it‘s different. We are in a very different place in our careers. We both realized our dream which was to become a Formula 1 driver. He realized his dream of being a Formula 1 world champion. I am still chasing my dream to become an F1 champion.”
Since Charles Leclerc arrived at Ferrari, there have been many opportunities to duel with the two-time Formula 1 world champion. From the controversies after the 2019 Austrian Grand Prix to the challenges in the first part of 2022, Charles and Max have had numerous encounters, always demonstrating great sportsmanship. “When I have a competitive car that allows me to challenge him, things always get very intense. But in the end, it’s part of the sport, and I believe we respect each other a lot. That’s what matters.” – the Ferrari man added.
The turning point? According to Charles Leclerc, it was their entry into the most important motorsport series. “I think once we arrived in F1. I think this was the moment when we both matured a lot. And the relationship changed,” concluded the Monegasque driver.
