It has been a difficult first part of the 2022 Formula 1 championship for Scuderia Ferrari and Charles Leclerc, despite the very encouraging start, as the Monegasque driver managed to win in Bahrain and Australia, two of the first three F1 events this year. Since then, unfortunately, a series on power unit failures and less than ideal tyre strategies have led to more than 100 points lost against Red Bull and Max Verstappen. While Charles will fight to the end, it’s unlikely he will be able to realistically recover the gap after summer break.
For now, Charles Leclerc has three weeks to rest and recuperate before he will attempt to salvage his season over an intense period of nine races in 12 weeks, starting with the Belgian Grand Prix at the end of the month.
The Ferrari driver confirmed that the 2022 F1 championship looks “more and more difficult” as a result of the events in the first part of the season, but says “until it’s mathematically over, then I still want to believe in it. This is what gives me the motivation”.
Given the current standings, Charles Leclerc basically has nothing to lose in the nine last races of the 2022 Formula 1 campaign. With this in mind, how will he approach the second part of the season?
“I really feel like this first part of the season has been my strongest in Formula 1 and I think the way I have worked” – Charles Leclerc says, “and the way we have worked as a team – in terms of finding the right set-up, in terms of building up to the qualifying lap in Q3, or just preparing the race – has been the best I have ever done in Formula 1. So there is no need for me to change that approach. Again, try and grow from the mistakes of the first half, but try and perform as well as the first half because the performance I’ve given, I’m extremely happy about. And this I want to keep. So there won’t be any significant change. We just need to try and work as a team to put a weekend together for the nine remaining races and see where we end up.” – Scuderia Ferrari Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc explained.
