Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc was at the center of an intense battle with George Russell during the opening laps of the 2026 Australian Grand Prix, showcasing both his skill and the impact of the new F1 regulations.
The Ferrari driver’s words
Toto Wolff and Frederic Vasseur described the first laps of the 2026 Australian GP as the most spectacular in the last decade. Much of the credit goes to Charles Leclerc, who, with a significantly better start than the cars around him, took the lead of the race and responded blow by blow to George Russell’s overtaking attempts.
The Mercedes pit wall then decided to take advantage of the Virtual Safety Car triggered by Isack Hadjar’s technical failure to make a pit stop. Ferrari did not respond in kind, which meant George Russell overtook Charles Leclerc during the pit phase and pulled away toward victory at the Australian GP.
When asked about the 2026 rule changes and how they affect race tactics, Charles Leclerc said: “The new rules need a bit of time before we can reach conclusions. I just think they will definitely change the way we approach races and overtaking. Before, it was more about who was brave enough to brake last. Now, perhaps there’s more strategy behind every move you make, because every time you activate the boost button, you know there will be consequences afterward, so you have to carefully consider each action. It’s definitely a different way of racing.”
Charles Leclerc’s comments highlight the shift in Formula 1 for 2026, where strategy, energy management, and careful timing play a bigger role in overtaking and overall race performance than pure bravery or last-moment braking.
The Ferrari man therefore believes the 2026 regulations have transformed F1 overtaking into a strategic discipline where energy management is just as vital as late braking, marking a significant evolution in how drivers must compete on track.
