Charles Leclerc expresses strong commitment to Ferrari despite 2025 championship disappointment
Charles Leclerc has now entered his seventh season with Scuderia Ferrari in 2025, yet the long-awaited championship remains out of reach. Despite high hopes heading into the year, the Monegasque driver is once again falling short of title contention, casting further doubt on the Italian side’s ability to deliver on their promises.
At 27, Charles Leclerc has come close to championship glory in the past—finishing runner-up in 2022 and third in the standings in 2024—but that final step has eluded him. Expectations were higher than ever this season, especially with the arrival of seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton as his new teammate. Leclerc has since referred to Lewis Hamilton as the greatest driver in Formula 1 history, a clear sign of respect forged during their first 10 races together at Maranello. However, Ferrari’s results have failed to reflect the strength of their driver pairing.
With only three podium finishes to show in the first half of 2025, all delivered by Charles Leclerc, Ferrari’s performance has lagged significantly behind the frontrunners. After narrowly missing out on second place in the 2024 Constructors’ Championship—finishing just 14 points behind McLaren—the team’s current struggles have been both unexpected and concerning.
Leclerc now sits 94 points behind championship leader Oscar Piastri, while Lewis Hamilton trails even further, 25 points behind his teammate. The team’s title chances have rapidly faded, and according to those close to the Monegasque driver, he has been left astonished by the apparent lack of belief within the Ferrari camp. Internally, there’s a sense that the squad has already written off the remainder of the 2025 season.
The situation has become increasingly difficult to ignore, particularly as Ferrari head into the Austrian Grand Prix trailing McLaren by a staggering 191 points in the Constructors’ standings. This underwhelming campaign has not only cast doubts over team boss Fred Vasseur’s future but also sparked speculation about the long-term commitment of key personnel—the Monegasque included.
Charles Leclerc open to the idea of ending his Formula 1 career at Ferrari
While internal pressure mounts, Charles Leclerc’s future has also become the subject of speculation. Though contracted through 2029—currently the longest active deal on the grid—his name has been loosely linked to Mercedes, where both seats are expected to be open for the 2026 season. Despite this, Ferrari remain confident in their star driver’s loyalty and determination to bring the team back to winning ways.
Speaking in Austria with The Times, Charles Leclerc indicated that he remains fully committed to Ferrari’s long-term vision. He acknowledged the difficulty of the current season but reaffirmed his passion for the Scuderia and expressed that it is entirely possible he could follow in the footsteps of Michael Schumacher by retiring with the team. Schumacher famously ended his first stint in Formula 1 with Ferrari in 2006, only to briefly return to the sport with Mercedes in 2010.
The Ferrari driver reportedly said he was still deeply committed to the Italian side and that his long-term contract reflected his belief in the Maranello team’s project. He emphasized that his primary obsession was to bring Ferrari back to the top alongside Lewis Hamilton and Fred Vasseur. He also made it clear that he didn’t currently envision himself racing anywhere else and considered it a very real possibility that he could spend the remainder of his F1 career in red.
Ferrari must act swiftly to address Charles Leclerc’s frustrations and secure his future
Despite his loyalty, Charles Leclerc’s frustrations are becoming harder to hide. Reports suggest that Ferrari will do everything possible to convince him to stay, even as interest from Mercedes continues to grow. Although his relationship with the team remains strong, technical and strategic shortcomings are beginning to test the limits of that bond.
Among the most pressing issues is a significant floor plank defect that is costing Charles Leclerc around 15 seconds per race. This mechanical flaw has had a major impact on his performance, compounding concerns about Ferrari’s lack of competitiveness. Moreover, early doubts are beginning to surface regarding the Scuderia’s 2026 power unit, with some insiders fearing it may fall behind rivals—particularly Mercedes, who are tipped to produce the most powerful engine under the new regulations.
The Monegasque driver now finds himself reflecting on whether Ferrari can truly offer him a path to the title. With his championship window still open but shrinking, he must decide whether loyalty alone can justify staying the course. Should Ferrari fail to convince him of a brighter future, a switch to a more competitive team could become a serious consideration.
As the 2025 Formula 1 season progresses, Ferrari face the urgent task of turning things around—both to restore their own championship ambitions and to retain a driver who still believes in their legacy but is increasingly aware of the clock ticking on his ultimate Formula 1 goal.
