“I have no idea what happened.” With these few words, Charles Leclerc’s qualifying session for the 2021 Qatar Grand Prix ended in Q2. The Monegasque driver struggled a lot from the first laps of Saturday’s qualifying and was unable to understand what went wrong with him in the morning free practice.
Initially Charles Leclerc tried to qualify for Q3 with the medium tire, but was for from the competition despite his driving sensations were positive. Even the transition to the softer compound was not enough, and the Monegasque driver was eliminated in Q2, while his teammate Carlos Sainz was able to make it through to Q3 on the medium tyre:
“There was something strange. Honestly, I was within a second of Carlos despite not making huge mistakes or things out of the ordinary” – Charles Leclerc admitted, at the end of the qualifying session for the 2021 Qatar Grand Prix – “We have to look carefully to understand what happened, because this time I don’t have any explanation. Normally when I’m in the car in qualifying I know what I’m doing well and what I’m wrong, but this time it’s not like that. It is truly a very bad surprise to see times so different from what we expected. We will certainly have to find something”. – he added.
“As for the tire preparation, I never felt like I was in the right window. Especially in the first sector where I was 5-6 tenths behind everyone. I didn’t feel good” – the Scuderia Ferrari driver concluded.
