Scuderia Ferrari Team Principal Mattia Binotto recently confirmed that the Italian side will bring an engine upgrade in the second half of the 2021 Formula One season, yet Charles Leclerc did not want to make any predictions on when the SF21 car will be able to use the latest power unit version.
Ferrari confirmed that the update will be wide in scope, taking in most of the components and ancillaries of the engine, as the Maranello team continue preparations for the next year, when an engine freeze will be introduced.
Asked about Ferrari’s intentions of introducing the upgrade, Charles Leclerc kept his cards close to his chest.
“No, I can’t [say]. I know there’s an upgrade and it will be under the hybrid part of the engine. When we’ll bring it, we don’t know yet.” – the Monegasque driver explained – “The updated engine will come later this year, we don’t know yet when, but this should be a positive step. It won’t be a revolution, but I think it is a significant step, so hopefully we will be able to take advantage of it once it will be in the car!”
The 2022 Formula 1 season will see a major overhaul of the technical regulations, and Charles Leclerc is confident this will provide the Maranello team with the ideal opportunity to get back to the top:
“It is definitely a good opportunity for us, as it is for everyone on the grid as we are all starting back from zero,” Leclerc added. “I feel we are doing a good job as a team, and I trust the job that we are doing. Let’s see how it goes, but it is definitely an opportunity. I hope we will take it in the right way and we’ll be able to fight for the title next year along with other teams.” – Scuderia Ferrari Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc concluded.
