After the weekend in Azerbaijan, Scuderia Ferrari was seeking confirmation in Florida regarding their understanding of the SF-23. As usual, the Maranello team hoped to improve their overall result in the fifth round of the season through a good qualifying performance. However, Charles Leclerc’s mistakes in the two Q3 runs compromised his weekend with a crash into the barrier at turn 7.
Starting in seventh place was a prelude to a race that was more enigmatic than suffering, in which the Monegasque had to battle in the less desired areas of the standings. Charles was a passenger in a car with different behavior in every lap, regardless of the compound used.
Unfortunately, this feeling was confirmed through the last team radio, where the Ferrari driver asked Xavi Marcos, his Spanish track engineer, to check the car’s behavior, especially in high-speed segments, which had a very anomalous behavior.
Charles Leclerc was “taken” to the finish line by a car he did not trust and that had already let him down during the qualifying session. The random reactions of the SF-23 in every turn represent the worst scenario for drivers and engineers, forced to analyze a non-linear performance.
Carlos Sainz’s race was also characterized by flashes of competitiveness, especially in the first stint on medium tires, which then degraded irregularly. The Azerbaijan race had provided an acceptable result on the track and reassuring for the technical area, which had finally found on the track the evidence simulated in Maranello.

The unpredictable pace shown by the SF-23 has disoriented the drivers and, at the same time, thrown the technicians of the Italian side into despair, unable to believe what they were observing. The reaction to frustration betrays a man’s nature even when trying to mantain a professional approach, and in this sense, Charles Leclerc’s weekend is undoubtedly enlightening.
The disastrous error during qualifying reflects a season in which Charles Leclerc is forced to push beyond the limit to gain tenths where the car is not able to perform well. The extremely tight trajectory set by the Monegasque was an extreme attempt to replicate the line used smoothly by the Red Bull RB19 cars at the Miami International Autodrome in Florida, USA.
This was a necessary choice to try to score a great result in the qualifying session, as often happens for the Monegasque in the key phases of Saturday. It was an uncompromising approach, aware that the next day there would be no chance of keeping up with the RB19s, settling for a difficult fight against Aston Martin and Mercedes.
Charles Leclerc does not resign himself to mediocrity and, as a result, reacts to frustration by trying to extract the maximum potential from himself and the mechanical means. Other drivers in his place might act conservatively, content with good placings in qualifying and the race, but this is evidently not the profile adopted by the Ferrari driver.
Last year Charles showed off his overflowing talent as long as he was supported by the car. When the F1-75 started to falter, the mistakes were directly proportional to his disappointment. In the midst of his technical and mental maturity, Charles Leclerc seems not to accept the reality of a present that forces him to defer his dreams of glory.
Pole position and podium at the Baku City circuit were achieved through numerous risks that the Monegasque is taking to avoid the technical decline of the SF-23 car. This attitude is difficult to find in Carlos, who is an excellent “team player” and rarely compromises to push beyond. This approach allows for a more linear trend.
Charles’ mistake was considered almost a curse for the race. But the spin on Saturday showed one thing: accepting the technical limits of the SF-23 is not for him. However, be aware that if the evolution of the Ferrari car does not guarantee a significant performance step, frustration could become a boomerang for someone who accepts nothing less than victory.
