Mercedes dominates as Leclerc fears Ferrari face “huge gap”
Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc has admitted that Mercedes currently appear to hold a significant performance advantage, following a dominant qualifying display from the Silver Arrows at the Australian Grand Prix. The Monegasque driver acknowledged that, at least for the moment, Ferrari may have very limited opportunities to overturn the balance of power on track.
Mercedes confirms Ferrari’s worst fears
The concerns that Charles Leclerc had expressed at the end of Friday’s free practice sessions ultimately proved to be well founded. The performance advantage shown by Mercedes turned out to be far greater than many had expected after analyzing the data gathered during the winter testing sessions in Bahrain.
During qualifying for the Australian Grand Prix — the first qualifying session of the new season at the fast and demanding Melbourne street circuit — George Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli appeared to be in a league of their own. The Mercedes drivers comfortably outpaced the rest of the field, producing time gaps that have rarely been seen in modern Formula 1, with margins reminiscent of the dominant performances from nearly a decade ago.
For many fans watching the session unfold, the results immediately raised the possibility of a new era of dominance from the Silver Arrows, similar to what Formula 1 experienced during the early years of the turbo-hybrid engine regulations. Against this backdrop, Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc appeared to share some of the same concerns about the scale of Mercedes’ advantage.
Charles Leclerc’s pessimism after qualifying
Leclerc ultimately finished qualifying in fourth position, behind not only the two Mercedes cars but also the impressive Red Bull of Isack Hadjar. The young driver delivered a remarkable performance in his first qualifying appearance with his new team.
Speaking after the session, Leclerc praised Hadjar’s performance, saying: “It was impressive for his first qualifying session with the new team, congratulations because he deserves it and today he did better than us.”
However, the Ferrari driver’s main concern was the sizeable gap to the pole position time. On a circuit where lap times are under 80 seconds, Leclerc found himself more than eight-tenths of a second behind George Russell’s benchmark.
In an interview with Sky, the Monegasque driver admitted that the deficit was particularly disappointing. Later, speaking to French broadcaster Canal+, Leclerc expressed even greater pessimism regarding Ferrari’s chances of quickly closing the gap to Mercedes.
“As far as Mercedes are concerned, I don’t think there is much we can do for the moment. The gap is huge,” Leclerc said.
It was a statement that left very little room for interpretation. Nevertheless, Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur had repeatedly emphasized during the winter that the development of the current cars and power units would likely play a decisive role in shaping the competitive order throughout the season.
Another factor that could influence the competitive balance is the introduction of new FIA hot measurement tests for the fuel compression ratio starting in June. These tests could potentially alter the competitive landscape in Formula 1 if they impact how teams manage their power units.
For the time being, however, Leclerc appeared visibly disappointed with Ferrari’s current situation. The Monegasque driver even downplayed the potential benefit of Ferrari’s much-discussed advantage off the starting line, suggesting that it may not be enough to make a meaningful difference in the race.
“Mercedes take a bit longer than us to find the right window at the start, but we are not counting on that to win tomorrow’s race,” Leclerc explained. “I am pretty sure they will manage to start well and that there won’t be a big difference at the start.”
With Mercedes setting the pace in Melbourne and Ferrari struggling to match their speed over a single lap, the opening round of the 2026 Formula 1 season has already raised important questions about whether the Scuderia can realistically challenge for victories in the early part of the championship.
