Scuderia Ferrari Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc has opened up about how the Maranello team will address what went wrong with their strategy decisions in the last round of the 2022 Formula One season, the Monaco Grand Prix, in front of his own fans.
The Ferrari driver started from pole position and was on course to take a great race win in Monte Carlo, but the weather conditions led to an unfortunate outcome for the Maranelo team and Charles, due to a series of bad strategy options. As a result, the Monegasque driver was overtaken by his Maranello teammate Carlos Sainz as well as the Red Bull duo of Sergio Perez and Max Verstappen after the crucial pit-stop phase as the track was getting dry.
Charles Leclerc expressed his dissatisfaction for how the events unfolded in Monaco over the team radio during the race and at the end of the Monte Carlo Grand Prix, as he finished outside the podium zone with Sergio Perez taking victory ahead of Carlos Sainz and Max Verstappen respectively.
Charles Leclerc looked back back at the events of the race afterwards and explained what happened from his perspective.
“We just had to pit, obviously, and I think once I was in the pit lane, I got the message to stay out,” Charles Leclerc said – “But it was too late for me to do anything else, so there’s not much to add to that. Obviously, it was too late, but it’s like this. The first pit-stop was the mistake that made us [lose] the lead and, and then the second one also, but it’s like this. We’ll work from there and get better.”
In terms of how the Maranello team move forward and will attempt to avoid such wrong choices, Charles Leclerc explained that they will have discussions about it to assess the mistakes that were made:
“I think the answers, we’ll get them a bit later on. I think, obviously, it was a complex situation, and we’ll have quite a [few] meetings in the next few days to understand that as a team. We still need to discuss a bit more and to go a bit more into details.” – the Ferrari driver added.
The results in the Monaco Grand Prix now mean that Charles Leclerc now has a nine-point deficit against Red Bul”s Max Verstappen in the World Championship standings ahead of the Baku Grand Prix, while race winner Sergio Perez is now just six points behind the Ferrari driver.
