Charles Leclerc provided the main spark in an otherwise quiet Dutch Grand Prix Sprint at Zandvoort, passing Lando Norris to secure second place for Ferrari and producing competitive pace that gives the Scuderia encouragement ahead of qualifying and Sunday’s race.
The Ferrari driver made the team’s alternative Soft tyre strategy count during the closing stages, identifying an opportunity against Lando Norris and converting it into P2 behind George Russell. The result added another positive chapter to a weekend in which Ferrari’s race pace had already looked encouraging at Zandvoort.
Charles Leclerc says Ferrari’s Soft tyre gamble paid off
After climbing out of the SF-26, Charles Leclerc spoke to David Coulthard about the podium and the decision to run the Soft compound when most of the field had selected the Medium.
“Usually when you do something different from everyone else, it either produces a great result or it turns out to be a big mistake. In this case, we did a good job, the Soft choice paid off and the pace was good. I knew Lando didn’t have much energy deployment on the straight, so I had to take advantage of that moment. I’m happy I managed to overtake him towards the end. The car behaved well and I have a good feeling heading into qualifying and also the race,” Charles Leclerc explained.
The move on Lando Norris proved decisive, allowing Charles Leclerc to turn third on the grid into second at the finish. Ferrari’s broader Sprint execution, including its tyre management and the late attack on the McLaren, is covered in our detailed Dutch GP Sprint analysis.
Ferrari confidence grows ahead of Dutch GP qualifying
Charles Leclerc’s comments were particularly encouraging because the SF-26 maintained strong pace throughout the Sprint. The Monegasque was able to preserve the Soft tyres sufficiently to attack late in the race, while the car’s behaviour left him with positive sensations for the remainder of the Dutch Grand Prix weekend.
The immediate objective now shifts to qualifying. Ferrari will aim to place the SF-26 on the first or second row of the grid, giving Charles Leclerc the track position needed to build another strong result in Sunday’s Grand Prix.
After converting a different tyre strategy into second place in the Sprint, Charles Leclerc heads into the next competitive session with renewed confidence. More updates throughout the weekend can be found in our dedicated Charles Leclerc news section.
Qualifying at Zandvoort is scheduled for 16:00.
