Scuderia Ferrari Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc has confirmed that the power unit failures that he and his Maranello teammate Carlos Sainz have encountered in this first part of the 2022 Formula One championship are “definitely a concern”.
Charles Leclerc was finally able to put an end to the difficult period marked by engine-related retirements in Spain and Azerbaijan, as well as some poor strategy calls, by winning the Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg last weekend.
Unfortunately, the Italian side lost what could have been a great one-two result in Austria, due to the fact that Carlos Sainz was forced to retire with 12 laps until the end because of a power unit problem.
Ferrari’s engine problems “definitely a concern” for Charles Leclerc amid Red Bull title fight
As we reached the halfway mark of the 2022 Formula One campaign, Charles Leclerc sits 38 points behind his title rival Max Verstappen in the Drivers’ standings, while Scuderia Ferrari will attempt to recover 56 points to Red Bull in the Constructors’ battle during the second part of the season. However, given the fact that a lack of reliability proved to be Scuderia Ferrari’s main so far this year, the Monegasque is urging the Maranello team to steady the ship and avoid any further DNFs, which would definitely compromise any chances of fighting against Max Verstappen for the world title.

“It is definitely a concern, so we need to look into that and make sure that it doesn’t happen,” Charles Leclerc admitted, ahead of the French Grand Prix next weekend – “Obviously, it happened twice on my side in the last five races, and now Carlos again, so we need to get on top of this as quickly as possible.” – Scuderia Ferrari Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc added.
Despite the ongoing reliability worries, Charles Leclerc has praised the Italian side for bringing plenty of performance to the F1-75 challenger so far this F1 campaign. Asked what has changed on his car between his victories in Australia and Austria, he said: “Quite a bit. We got a package in Barcelona, then we had another upgrade at Silverstone, and it always went in the right way. I think the performance has been great since Australia, apart from Miami maybe where we were a little bit down compared to Red Bull. It’s been strong in the last five races, but we just couldn’t put everything together, so it’s great that we are now finally having a normal race on my side.” – he concluded.
