This time no errors in Q3. Charles Leclerc’s qualifying session in front of his fans was simply perfect, giving no chance to his rivals and taking a more than deserved pole position for himself and for Scuderia Ferrari, as the Maranello team also completed a front row lockout thanks to Carlos Sainz’s second place. A double smile for the Monegasque driver, who sees his main rival for the title only fourth behind the other Red Bull, that of Sergio Perez, who up to the third practice session was the only one who seemed able to challenge Charles Leclerc for pole on the streets of Monte Carlo.
“I waited for Q3 to really start pushing. The first lap was good, but I was even happier with the second lap, which I couldn’t finish – said Charles Leclerc at the press conference – “In the last moments I didn’t think about what happened last year, I went to the maximum as always . With the team we followed the evolution of the track very well during qualifying, even if there is always the traffic variable here. I didn’t want to hinder someone and have a penalty, but in some places it was impossible, because I was afraid of ruining the tires if I pushed too hard.” – the Ferrari driver added.
The race remains a huge unknown due to possible rain, which is expected to hit the track on Sunday between late morning and early afternoon: “I don’t think I’ve ever driven here in the rain. In recent years we have struggled in the wet, but today I think we have also improved this aspect so I am not worried, we are fast also in wet conditions.”
“I’m so incredibly happy! It’s been a very smooth weekend. I knew the pace was there, I just had to do the job. The last lap before the red flag was really really good.. The car felt amazing, and it’s amazing to have Carlos with me on the front row! Everything has gone smooth until now. I hope it will also be the case tomorrow and we will see how it goes. I don‘t think about the past and I just focus on the future, focus on my job. Hopefully we have a smooth race.” – Scuderia Ferrari Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc concluded at the end of the qualifying session for the 2022 Monaco Grand Prix.
