Charles Leclerc, Monte Carlo still bitter
Once again, the home race didn’t bring any good luck to Charles Leclerc. The walls of the Monte Carlo circuit are truly cursed for the Scuderia Ferrari driver, who had put himself in a good position for a podium with the third place he “achieved” in qualifying. However, the impeding incident with Lando Norris forced the Monegasque driver to start from sixth place and therefore to race in a group, mostly stuck in traffic given the track characteristics of the Monte Carlo circuit.
Even with clear track ahead, however, Charles Leclerc couldn’t push forward, and it was due to tire management, which remains an unresolved issue for Ferrari. For this reason, the Monegasque driver, who waited for rain for over 40 laps, had to abandon his initial strategy and return to the pits. And, as another twist of fate, it started raining just six minutes later.
Charles Leclerc’s words
“We struggled towards the end of the stint with the hard tires, but it was strange because they were working well before. I was saving the rear tires, but then we struggled,” commented the Ferrari driver to Sky Sport F1. “There’s no doubt that there is a lot of work to do, tire management remains a weak point for us.” – the Ferrari driver pointed out.
Defending the strategy
Charles Leclerc also defended the Maranello team when the pit stop to switch to intermediates seemed late: “When it started raining, we were aware of the risks we could take by staying on track. Now that the race is over, I can say that I could have entered the pits earlier, but in those rainy conditions, with many cars on track still using slick tires, it pays off to stay out, wait for the Safety Car, and then go to the pits,” Charles Leclerc continued. “But the Safety Car never came, and we lost positions there. It was a choice.” – the Monegasque concluded at the end of the Monaco Grand Prix.
