A shock clause has emerged in Charles Leclerc’s contract that could lead him to part ways with Ferrari.
Charles Leclerc and Ferrari together forever, except for a clause. The Monegasque driver has decided: he will bind himself to the Maranello team indefinitely, thus renewing his commitment to the Prancing Horse.
In the extensive contract, it is not specified how long the driver #16 will race for the Prancing Horse. However, there is a “dangerous” clause that could prompt him to leave the historic Italian team in the near future.
Italian daily newspaper Il Corriere della Sera reveals additional details about Charles Leclerc’s renewal with Scuderia Ferrari, specifying what this clause entails.
According to the renowned Italian newspaper, the Monegasque driver’s new contract includes a buyout clause that could allow him to leave the Maranello team. However, there’s a catch: the departure could happen if, by 2026, the driver does not have a winning car.
Otherwise, he will stay with Ferrari until 2028, effectively extending for four consecutive years. This translates to a five-year contract for Charles Leclerc, as he had done previously.
In 2019, he claimed to have signed “the longest contract in Ferrari’s history,” tying himself to the team until 2024.
How much will Charles Leclerc earn now? According to Corriere della Sera, the Monegasque will receive just over 30 million dollars next year in terms of base salary. An increase compared to the 24 million dollars from the previous contract.
In addition to this, there are bonuses for championship victories, which would further boost his salary.
The situation for Carlos Sainz, on the other hand, is still to be determined. Spain is confident that the official announcement of the renewal will come shortly, as there are still details to be clarified. The Spaniard could stay with Ferrari for one or two more years and then embark on a new adventure with Audi in 2026.
