Once again, during the Canadian GP, we heard heated communications between Charles Leclerc and the Ferrari pit wall. At the center of this debate was the strategy to be applied to the #16 SF-25. The Monegasque driver disagreed with his race engineer but accepted the team’s order to pit even when he wanted to stay out.
Charles Leclerc had made a mistake in Qualifying, which forced him to start from eighth position. For this reason, the team decided to change strategy and start on the hard tyre. The first stint was very competitive, and his pace was similar to Norris’s with the same tyres. Charles Leclerc had positive feelings about his tyres and didn’t want to pit. After the team made the opposite decision, he said: “I don’t understand this strategy.”
The Criticism of Ferrari
Davide Valsecchi, who was present at the GP for the F1TV channel, also commented on the issue of Team Radio communications between Charles Leclerc and the Ferrari pit wall in Canada. His view is shared by many and reflects a complicated situation in Maranello: “I don’t think this situation makes the team look good.”
The Italian wanted to highlight that it’s not the first time: “The decision on strategy is questioned every time. I don’t know why this happens, the strategy is discussed and decided before the race. I don’t know why these conversations keep happening on the radio. There are complaints at every race.”
At the heart of the controversy is also the matter related to the rumours circulating in the days leading up to the Canadian event. “Already on Friday and Thursday there were disputes with the Italian media, after they spread news about Fred Vasseur’s future, criticising his work. The team, however, stated that there is nothing true and everything is under control.”
