Change of attitude
The clarification after the tension. Initially, in the heat of the moment after the qualifying session for the 2023 Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix, Scuderia Ferrari Monegasque driver Charles Leclerc let loose with fiery words against the Maranello team’s pit wall, openly criticizing the team’s strategy, accusing them of not listening to him and leaving him on the intermediate tires for too long in the early phase of Q2 when he was calling for soft tires to set a faster time than his rivals.
However, the strategy that Ferrari adopted with Charles Leclerc was essentially the same used by all the other teams for their drivers, with the exception of Alex Albon and Williams, who took advantage of the slick tire immediately. Apparently, Charles Leclerc was called to order after his verbal outbursts and returned to speak to the microphones of Sky Sport F1, precisely while his team principal Frédéric Vasseur was being interviewed, to ‘apologize’.
Charles Leclerc’s reflection
“I didn’t do a good job,” admitted the Monegasque driver, reassured by the French manager, who has been his point of reference since Sauber. “There were many of us with this plan, and in the end, I didn’t succeed compared to the others. We will talk to the team to improve because it wasn’t a good day. I let myself go a bit,” he confessed, referring to his earlier statements. “There is so much passion, so much desire to do well, and today it didn’t go as we wanted.” – the Ferrari man admitted.
At this point, Charles Leclerc shifted his focus to tomorrow’s race at the 4.361-kilometre Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve in Montreal, not burdening the environment with expectations but acknowledging that the performance shown by the SF-23 in the practice sessions makes it legitimate to dream of a significant comeback. “Looking at the race, if it’s dry, we can make a good comeback. Where we can end up, we’ll see, but we have a competitive car on Friday. That gives me confidence that it can be done. The feelings were very good yesterday, and that’s a positive aspect.” – Charles Leclerc concluded after the qualifying session in Montreal.
