There has been talk of their rivalry for a long time, especially during last season. Contrasts on the track and via radio, incidents and the ‘handover’ of deliveries in the team’s hierarchies were highlighted. Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc have been at the center of the crosshairs for many months for their relationship within the Ferrari team, but in this 2020 the relationship between the young talent and the ‘expert’ champion has changed a lot. On a personal level, on and off the track, an attitude of greater closeness between the two was noted, not even affected by the Styrian accident at the beginning of the championship.
In Turkey, Sebastian Vettel and Charles Leclerc returned to compete on the track, with the German who took advantage of a mistake by his team mate to earn third place, taking his first poduium of the season. On the radio and in post-race interviews, Charles was very hard on himself, criticizing himself heavily for the mistake he made in braking, which made him lose his position to his teammate and also to Sergio Perez, second at the finish. However, the Monegasque also wanted to congratulate Sebastian Vettel, recognizing how important this result was for the German after an extremely difficult season.
On the other hand, Seb – perhaps somewhat surprisingly – had very nice words to say about the young talent from the Principality, speaking to Sky Sport F1 after the race: “I think Charles for me is perhaps the greatest star of the future. Maybe more than Max, because he’s really good. Today I think he is not happy, but in 10 years for him to have this podium or not will make no difference”. A sincere compliment, arrived by comparing Charles Lelcerc with his great rival of the new generation, Max Verstappen, also a great disappointment of the day, in a GP that saw him cross the finish line only in sixth position.
