During the free practice of the Qatar Grand Prix, the sand on the track made things difficult for the drivers. However, Scuderia Ferrari Spanish driver Carlos Sainz saw humor in it! Images from the Lusail Internatonal circuit show a significant amount of sand being kicked up by the racing cars, making it challenging to manage the only practice session allowed for the drivers this weekend. What is of greater concern to the teams is undoubtedly the overheating of components, mainly the power unit.
However, there is one driver who was not discouraged by the challenging situation. Carlos Sainz, during an exchange with his engineers in the early stages of FP1, exclaimed, “Well, my father would go fast in these conditions!” Carlos Sainz Sr., in fact, is not only a rally super champion but has also accumulated numerous participations (and victories) in the historic and glorious Dakar over the past fifteen years.
The sand on the circuit is causing many problems for the drivers, who are already struggling because the track’s asphalt is entirely new and not rubberized. During the first session, many drivers had difficulty keeping their cars on the track. Considering that there are expected wind gusts during the night, it is likely that quite a few drivers will encounter issues during the qualifying shootout.
