Scuderia Ferrari introduced some aerodynamic updates for the 2022 French Grand prix, as the Maranello team is continuing to work on limiting porpoising and generating more downforce, updates which have proved efficient each time they were brought to the track in this first part of the 2022 Formula 1 season, but in France it’s worth pointing out also the lack of updates to the power units.
This is not a surprise, as Mattia Binotto had already announced it after the disastrous weekend in Baku. “The solutions cannot be found in two-three days. We thought we had reached a sufficient level of reliability but clearly it is not the case. We will work hard”. He reiterated after the Austrian GP. “We are not yet safe from reliability problems. We have to work hard on it and we will try to understand in order to find solutions for the short term”. And lastly he reaffirmed it a few days ago, after the French Grand Prix, but with some more positive news. “There have been problems and we are aware of them. I think we understand the problem, even if it has not yet been definitively resolved. We are managing it, which means being able to face the race with the awareness and tranquility to finish it without problems ”.
A management that is related more to the power unit mappings, which are made in a ‘safer’ way especially in the torrid Paul Ricard and which slightly limited the maximum speeds of the F1-75s on two straights of the Mistral, and not on hardware. Having the efficient rear wing available should not be underestimated, as it contributed to the lowering of the engines to avoid deleterious breakdowns without incurring speed deltas above 10 km / h, as seen in Jeddah where Ferrari used the wing less efficient and highest load also seen in Canada on Carlos Sainz’s F1-75.
With regard to the Spaniard, the engine introduced at the Paul Ricard circuit is the “same specification as the Power Unit that Charles is using”. And just like the one of Kevin Magnussen’s Haas. Mattia Binotto was clear. Regarding the fact that some updates in terms of reliability could have already been mounted in France, the Ferrari team principal has again denied the rumors, replying with a “not on this power unit”, which means that Ferrari has in mind to introduce by the end of the 2022 Formula 1 season a more reliable power unit, as confirmed by formu1a.uno.
