“Carlos is our number one goal,” admitted the former Mercedes, now team principal of the British team since last season, during the Canada race weekend. “He is a winning driver who last year, against all odds, beat Verstappen in Singapore with a brilliant drive, and it’s not the first time.”
“He is intelligent in his approach, logical, incredibly fast. What he did this year in Shanghai, which may seem negative, is not. He is an impressive athlete who can reset, come back out, and then beat your teammate in those conditions.
And then he added: “I think this demonstrates how strong he is as a driver. I believe any team on the starting grid would be fortunate to have someone like Carlos alongside them.”
The Spaniard would have been convinced by the figure of James Vowles, who, according to Auto Motor Und Sport, would have put forward a significant proposal, offering Carlos a four-year contract but with the possibility of terminating it at the end of 2026 if the expectations of the Madrilenian are not met.
More than the economic aspect, contractual flexibility is an essential factor for Carlos Sainz, with Williams, despite its growth in recent years and James Vowles‘ ambitious vision, obviously unable to guarantee performances of a top team like Mercedes, Red Bull, Ferrari, and McLaren.

The regulatory change in 2026 will also play a decisive role, with the new regulations inevitably creating significant gaps between the teams on the grid, which obviously cannot be predicted at the moment.
