Marc Gene is happy to hear the confirmation of one of the most important moves in Formula One, the signing of Carlos Sainz by Ferrari for 2021. As a Spanish driver, the Scuderia Ferrari ambassador and tester reveals that the Italian company had noticed Carlos a long time ago and anticipates the great impact he expects this to have for Spanish viewership.
The Ferrari tester tells Carlos that what he is about to experience as a Scuderia Ferrari driver is going to be very nice. In addition, he sees in his transfer to Ferrari a great way to revitalize the consumption of Formula 1 in Spain.
“He is not aware of what he has achieved. He is going to experience something very beautiful. He is going to experience fun and unforgettable moments. His signing in Italy is very pleasing. Latino fans feel identified,” says Marc Gené in Cadena Cope’s ‘The Great Match’
“It will be a boost for Formula 1 in Spain. I don’t know if it will reach Fernando Alonso’s level, but it is a very positive ‘boom’,” he stresses.
Marc Gené, who knows the threads that move in Maranello, explains that Carlos Sainz’s was not a last minute signing, but a long operation: “He is a driver that grows every day. He’s liked very much. The signing is not taken in a hasty way. First of all, he has to be a very fast and not a controversial driver, it is what we are looking for. He has always been liked very much,” he explains.
Despite the fact that in Ferrari the motto is that the team is always bigger than its drivers, Marc makes it clear that Carlos has not signed a second driver contract: “At Ferrari the team comes first. We give priority to the Constructors’ World Championship, but he will not be the second driver. You work for the team rather than on a personal level. Carlos will work perfectly with Charles Leclerc. He will make the best of it”, he assures.
In addition, Gené remarks that Sainz will land on a winning team and that Ferrari has signed him because he sees in him the potential qualities of a champion. “There have to be many conditions to win a World Championship, but he is in a team that has the potential. We would not have signed him if we did not think he could be world champion,” he recalls.
Finally, Marc Gené has also given his opinion on the possible return of Fernando Alonso to Formula 1. Marc agrees and bets on seeing his compatriot on the grid again in 2021: “I think he will return, he would like to return in 2021. The preseason at Renault has not been bad. He will evaluate it. It is my feeling,” – the Ferrari ambassador concluded.
