Home » Carlos Sainz targeting F1 World Championship: “When you drive for Ferrari, that’s the only goal”

Carlos Sainz targeting F1 World Championship: “When you drive for Ferrari, that’s the only goal”. Carlos targeting F1 World Championship.

Last year, Scuderia Ferrari Spanish driver Carlos Sainz secured his first Formula 1 career race win, which took place in the British Grand Prix at the Silverstone Circuit, while also taking three pole positions, but had to settle for fifth place in the Drivers’ Championship at the end of the year, due to a series of power unit technical failures and some difficulties adapting to the F1-75 challenger in the first part of the 2022 F1 campaign.

Now in his third season with the Maranello team, the Spaniard aims to take the next step and compete for the world title with Max Verstappen, his Maranello teammate Charles Leclerc and most likely the two Mercedes drivers.

“When you drive for Ferrari, the goal must always be to fight for the World Championship and try to win,” Carlos Sainz said in a recent interview with the Italia and international media. “This is the clear idea which is  not only in my mind, but of the whole team.” – the Spaniard pointed out.

Carlos Sainz admitted that during the winter break he spent a lot of time considering how to achieve his ambitious goal: “If you want to be world champion, you have to be the best driver and have the best team,” he explained.

“What I focus on is that short-term vision: what can I do? What can the team do to become a better team? How can I be the best driver on the grid?” – the Ferrari man continued.

The Spanish driver feels more confident ahead of the 2023 Formula 1 season than the previous one. “I feel ready for this new challenge. What matters is what happens after the season has started, how you can stay true and loyal to your ambitions and short-term goals.” – he added.

The internal challenge with Charles Leclerc doesn’t worry him
For the third year, Carlos Sainz will have Charles Leclerc as a teammate at Scuderia Ferrari, who last season started the campaign a lot better and was the only man able to challenge Max Verstappen for the World Championship, at least in the first part of the year, when the F1-75 could match the Red Bull RB18.

The challenge with the Monegasque does not worry the Spaniard, as he prefers to think about how to win for the Maranello team: “I am aware that Charles is a very fast driver. He’s been doing really well the last couple of years, but I’m not too worried about that. I’m more focused on myself and my team.” – he concluded.

The 2023 Formula 1 season begins in Bahrain over the weekend of March 3-5, after the official winter pre-season testing session in Sakhir.
