Carlos Sainz struggled to get into gear in 2022 after an excellent first season with Scuderia Ferrari, but he worked hard and took his first win at Silverstone last month. The Spaniard acknowledges that the first part of the 2022 Formula One campaign has been a rollercoaster of emotions, but despite the huge deficit compared to Max Verstappen, the Ferrari driver still sees a chance to win the championship this year.
Carlos Sainz is now just 22 points behind his Maranello team mate Charles Leclerc, but he’s not the only one aiming for at least second place in the championship. The Ferrari duo is joined by Sergio Perez and George Russell, while Lewis Hamilton is just ten points behind the Spaniard.
From P2 to P6 there is little distance, but the championship leader has a huge advantage in front. However, Carlos Sainz has not lost sight of his former teammate
There are still nine races to go until the end of the 2022 Formula 1 season, a triple European leg before the long-haul end to the campaign. Carlos Sainz is 102 points behind Max Verstappen, which realistically makes a title challenge unlikely, but given the erratic nature of the championship so far, the Ferrari driver is optimistic about the opportunities ahead.
“Statistically, anything is possible. That’s why my intention hasn’t changed,” he says. “I’m still going into every weekend trying to win the race. It’s a crazy year we are doing. If you see how consistently the top-two teams are on top, it should be an easy championship where one wins, one finishes second, but it’s not like that. There are a lot of points swings, which makes me believe everything is possible. It’s a very different year to anything before as the racing is better, more things happening in the race, and I’m going to believe that until it’s over.” – he said, in an interview for Formula1.com

Having secured his first Formula 1 victory at the Silverstone circuit a few weeks ago, respect for the job he is doing at the Maranello team and the growing consistency in 2022 which has characterised his entire F1 career until now, Carlos Sainz is putting himself in the mix for the top spots. Does he think he can win the World Championship in the next years alongside Scuderia Ferrari, if he has a car to do so? “I think so,” he confirmed – “This year, my start of the season put me 50 points behind straight away and it’s difficult to make yourself look like a championship contender when you are minus-50. But if you look closely at the last few races, I am performing at a very similar level to the top guys. I feel like I’m there. It’s just that price I paid at the beginning of the season is costing me this year.” – Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz concluded.
